Brisbane, Australia, 6 April 2023 – New technology that pushes the boundaries of far UVC LEDs to emit at shorter wavelengths, at higher power, and with longer lifetimes, will be presented by Silanna UV at the International Conference on UV LED Technologies & Applications (ICULTA) in Berlin, Germany from April 23 to 26, 2023.
On April 24, from 10.00-10.30am, William Lee, Silanna UV’s Product Development Manager, will give a talk, “High Power 235nm far UVC LED using SPSL technology". The company’s SF1 series 235nm and SF3 series 255 nm UV LEDs will be exhibited. Silanna is a Silver sponsor of the conference.
New UV-C LED technology
This revolutionary UVC LED technology from Silanna UV offers huge advantages for applications as diverse as disinfection, water quality monitoring, gas sensing, liquid chromatography, and chemical and biological analysis.
Old-fashioned AlGaN-based far UVC LEDs in general suffer from poor carrier injection, low light emission and high drive voltage, due to the inherit limitations of high Al-content AlGaN.
Silanna’s new short period superlattice (SPSL) far UVC LED structure helps overcome these issues. In a SPSL device, composed of repeating layers of AlN and GaN, the presence of GaN maintains the TE dominance of the emission as well as lowering the activation energy of donors, resulting in more efficient devices compared to LEDs made with the conventional AlGaN technology. Furthermore, the emission wavelength can be easily tuned using the thickness of the GaN well, a process that is significantly easier to control than tuning of Al composition in the barrier and well.

Silanna UV Introduces TO-Can Package Format for 235nm and 255nm UVC LEDs
High-performance, hermetically sealed packages ideal for sensing applications
Brisbane, Australia, 18 January, 2023 – Silanna UV is pleased to announce the release of two new products in its SF1 235nm and SN3 255nm series of UVC LEDs: the SF1-3T9B5L1 and the SN3-5T9B5L1.
Silanna UV's new UVC LEDs feature the Transistor Outline (TO-can) package format, which consists of a header and a cap that together form a hermetically sealed package. This innovative design protects sensitive semiconductor components within the package. The header supplies power to the encapsulated components, while the cap enables the transmission of optical signals. The strong weld between the cap and the header provides hermetic protection to the die, and the ball lens offers a narrow viewing angle for the high irradiance required in most sensing applications.
An industrial standard TO-39 footprint, using a steel header with a gold coating. These devices have ESD protection and contain no mercury. The TO-39 package has an 18-degree viewing angle enhancing radiant intensity and measurement resolution.
SF1-3T9B5L1: SF1 235nm Far UVC LED
The SF1-3T9B5L1 is a far UVC emitting device with a peak wavelength of 235nm, making it effective for water quality detection of Nitrate (NO3) and Nitrite (NO2), gas detection of Carbon dioxide (CO2), and liquid chromatography.
SN3-5T9B5L1: SN3 255nm Deep UVC LED
The SN3-5T9B5L1 is a powerful deep UVC LED with a peak wavelength of 255nm, making it effective for water quality detection of COD (chemical oxygen demand) and TOC (total organic carbon), as well as gas detection for Ozone (O3) and medical analyzers. It has a high optical output power, making it suitable for a range of applications including chemical and biological analysis, water quality monitoring, gas sensing, and liquid chromatography.
High stability and performance UVC LEDs
Both the SF1-3T9B5L1 and SN3-5T9B5L1 offer excellent stability and performance, with less than 0.5 percent drift and fluctuation in a steady state. They are also compatible with off-the-shelf optical systems, making them a convenient and reliable choice for sensing applications.
Silanna UV looks forward to continuing to provide high-quality UVC LED solutions to its customers.

Silanna UV Highlights Nitrate Sensing Applications of New UVC LED Technology
SF1 series UVC LEDS: A better way to detect nitrate contamination in water
News Highlights
- Nitrate contamination of drinking water is a growing global threat
- Silanna UV’s new SF1 LEDs detect nitrates in water faster and cheaper
- Full nitrate detector reference design available
- Ideal for cost-effective, fast, reliable, low-power contamination detection
- Based on new, patented ultraviolet LED manufacturing technology
Brisbane, Australia, 17th November, 2022 – Newly-developed ultraviolet LEDs from Silanna UV are ready to take Nitrate Sensing applications into a new era, promising cleaner and safer drinking water that is free from nitrate contamination. Silanna’s SF1 series of LEDs leverage the company’s patented short period superlattice (SPSL) technology that provides industry-leading performance and power output in the challenging 230nm-260nm UV range (Far UVC and Deep UVC). Silanna now provides a complete reference design for a nitrate detector based on this technology.
As well as nitrate detection, Silanna’s SF1 and SN3 UV LEDs are ideal for sterilization, water and gas sensing, instrumentation, and medical analyzers.
The increasing challenge of nitrate contamination in water
Nitrate contamination of drinking water is a growing threat around the world, with nitrates from agricultural, industrial and natural biological processes increasingly contaminating water supplies as populations grow and expand. Detection of nitrates traditionally relied on an expensive process in which broadband light generated by a UV lamp is passed through spectroscopy to extract the far UVC wavelength needed for sensing.
Silanna’s SF1 series LEDs provide a far more cost-effective, compact, reliable, low-power alternative to traditional methods of nitrate detection – and, thanks to patented technology, now lead the industry. In particular, SF1 series UVC emitters with a peak wavelength under 235nm and a Full-Width-Half-Max (FWHM) of 10nm are an ideal candidate for nitrate sensing applications.
Nitrate sensor reference design
To help users evaluate this new technology and develop products based on it, Silanna has created a nitrate sensing reference design featuring the company’s SF1 series LEDs. This module rapidly and accurately measures the nitrate content of a liquid sample.
The microcontroller-based reference design features a capacitive touch display, safety interlock, and compensates for thermal effects to maintain accuracy and avoid warm-up delay. The UVC LEDs package’s built-in 30-degree parabolic lens eliminates the need of secondary optics, making the system even more compact and cost effective. The module requires less than a second to make a measurement, not only saving time, but also extending component lifetime to over 100,000 measurements, and the concentration of the nitrate is measured at a resolution of 0.01mg/L-N according to estimates.
